after the election of Hoke Smith, who ran on a platform of denying blacks the
right to vote. On September 22, at least 16 black men were killed by a white
mob. The white mob had around 10,000 people rioting and terrorizing blacks by
destroying property and beating people in the streets. The rioting lasted for
four days with an unknown total death toll.
2.Civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and killed in Memphis,
Tennessee, on April 4, 1968, and the funeral services were held in Atlanta,
Georgia, on April 9. The nation watched the televised public service at
Morehouse College. The Civil Rights Digital Library estimates that between
50,000 and 300,000 people attended the service, with 120 million people viewing
it on television.

was gunned down in what police called an assassination.
